I traveled for 4 days with a girl I met on Facebook.
Because what is life without a little spontaneity ?
Girls trips tend to get a bad rep; friends go on vacation together and when they come back, mysteriously, no one is friends anymore and nobody knows why. & as someone who has had this experience 3 times, I chose a different route as a traveler moving forward.
I've always been known to be a solo traveler.
After having bad luck on girls trips, I decided to take on a new identity as someone who tresk the country alone. My family is always asking, "So where are you now?" & live vicariously through my wild adventures and stories of people I've met and things I've done. But one day, I decided to book a trip to Puerto Rico and posted on Facebook to see if anybody else wanted to come. To my surprise, a friend of a friend commented and said she was interested. We had never met in person, only DMed a few times about job stuff, as we were in the same industry.
I had no clue what she liked to do, how she liked to travel, I barely knew her last name except it was on her facebook page. But she was also an avid solo traveler and a super fun personality so we exchanged numbers so we could map out the details.
The meetup
We met at the airport as we landed the same day and I waited for her to arrive. I sat there eating my sandwhich before she had arrived wondering what she would be like, if she would be funny, if she was a hugger or a talker. If she liked to party or stay on the resort. But, once she got there, It truly felt like a blind date but upon meeting she was so sweet and bubbly like me and we instantly hit it off.
I walked up to her and both yelled in excitement and hugged. We complimented each other on how pretty we were (girls girls type things). We went to get her bags so we could
We planned to be in Puerto Rico for 4 days after a hurricane had just passed through the island so alot of things were closed down. When we arrived at our Airbnb, we didn't have water or power but we managed to handle it easily and positively and it honestly felt like we had been traveling together for years how we were able to communicate and pivot without any friction.
We were scared, but we were together. We followed each others lead and found solutions together. We used our flashlights and waited for the Airbnb host to bring us food and water. A great way to start a trip with a stranger, I might add, a little exciting.
Our host reimbursed us for our travel and we were able to stay at a hotel and enjoy the rest of our trip. It felt like I was traveling with my little sister. We went out into the city and explored, we tried so many different amazing restaurants, we took so many pictures together and of course made some cute videos for Tiktok.
A Girls Girls Trip
There was no arguing over the bathroom or what we were going to do. Nobody got left on one side of the island while the other went and explored. We had great conversation and an even better time. By the time it was time for us to go our seperate ways, it felt like I was parting with a friend I hadn't seen in awhile and decided to link up with on a girls trip.
One thing I learned is that, people will try to talk fear into your plans, but sometimes, you just have to go for it and try. You never know what experiences are lying on the other side of you being open minded. You never know the people you will meet, the things you'll be able to see and do, and most importantly, the stories you'll have afterwards.
I boarded that flight thinking I was taking a chance on a stranger. Looking back, I think I was really taking a chance on myself, on being open to connection in a world that constantly tells us to be afraid.
